… Back on Mull, meanwhile, it's worth noting that Alasdair McCrone's heroic company are also making a major push this year for younger audiences. In the autumn they will set off on a children's tour with a show based on Marie Hedderwick's much-loved Katie Morag stories and, in the meantime, at Dervaig, Fiona Colliss of Clown Conspiracy is presenting a delightful afternoon solo show for the four-to-eights called Egg, in which a little alien has to supervise two very precious eggs on their journey back to earth. Normally, I'm the kind of person who has to be carried out of clown shows, catatonic with boredom. But Colliss's clowning, delivered in a sparkly purple catsuit rather than the usual baggy gear, struck me as elegant, original, emotionally appealing and unusually thoughtful. The kids certainly loved it and, as for the large numbers of holiday-duty dads in the audience - well, oddly enough, on a sunny afternoon in Dervaig, they weren't complaining much either.
